  73.      In this issue of DFW ONLINE MAGAZINE, I wanted to begin by
  74. saluting an un-sung hero of the DFW BBS community.  His name:
  75. David Buckert.  If there is one single "King of the Uploaders" in
  76. Dallas-Fort Worth, it is--without question--David Buckert.
  77.      In David's case, however, I am not talking about someone who
  78. indiscriminately uploads everything under the sun to maintain his
  79. DL/UL ratio on BBS'es.  David consistently uploads quality
  80. shareware and--in most instances--it is "new" quality shareware.
  81.      I will modestly admit that there are very few sysops who
  82. spend as much time and money obtaining new files as I do; yet,
  83. David often shames me by obtaining a hard-to-get file before I
  84. even know it's out.
  85.      Chances are, if you download files, you often can thank
  86. David Buckert for the file. And, if he's so good at getting new
  87. files, why doesn't he start up his own board?
  88.      When David first discovered BBS'es, he says, "I looked
  89. around and there were so many good BBSes I didn't see a need for
  90. another one so I started doing what I do now."
  91.      What he does now is upload, upload, upload.
  92.  
  93.      According to David, he uploads files to about 30 boards
  94. every night, using ROBOCOMM, which interfaces with PCBoards and
  95. Wildcat.  As he admits, "The mix is heavily tainted by what I
  96. Like, but I try to send what the various boards specialize in."
  97.      So, the next time you peruse the file area of a Wildcat or
  98. PCBoard BBS, look for the name "David Buckert" and then say a
  99. little "Thanks, David."  Better yet, leave him a message.
  100. because this gentleman deserves our thanks for unselfishly
  101. providing Dallas-Fort Worth with a ton of quality shareware every
  102. month.

  104.      Now, if I can only figure out how to get ROBOCOMM to
  105. interface with TBBS. . . .

  108.      It's been quite a while since I checked into Jonathan
  109. McGuirr's U.S.S.INVERNESS BBS.  WOW!  Jonathan has been busy.
  110. System now runs on Wildcat, with 3 lines, CD/ROM, Fido, PGNET,
  111. and TON nets.  He has, without question, the BEST organized
  112. message conference area in the Metroplex.  And he's still adding!
  113.      Coming soon to U.S.S. INVERNESS BBS: 600 new message areas
  114. and more nets; Another CD/Rom; File areas for Macintosh and
  115. Amiga; BBS Callers Digest, Online Mall for PC Hardware; and 7

  157. dedicated to Windows files and echos and it is still FREE!.  No
  158. verification--no callback--no questionaire.  I like it!

  160.      Rod Porter's THE CROSS has switched from TriBBS to WildCat.

  164.      Garry Grosse has hadded 5 new high speed modems to 32-line
  165. CHRYSALIS.  He is also now an authorized PC-SIG BBS, which means
  166. he just added the PC-SIG CD/ROM that contains over 3700 programs.

  168.      Another ROBO board tossed in the towel recently.  Mike
  169. Kaylor's SHEER PASSION is now running on EZY (He was the old
  170. ENDEAVOR BBS).  Two nodes: 214-240-2069 and 214-240-5238.  Look
  171. for 3 CD/ROMS to go online soon.  And the board still maintains
  172. HAM and SATELLITE files.

  174.      Here's one you might have overlooked:  David Harrison's
  175. WANDERLAND BBS.  You'll find CIAnet, Time of Chaos, TradeWar
  176. 2002, Solar Realm, STar Fight, STack-Em, Death Mission, and other
  177. online games.  The number: 258-1037.

  179.      FLYER'S DOMAIN BBS is "Alive and Well."  For some reason, I
  180. thought Frank Laczko's fine PCB BBS was gone but it's still
  181. around (as it has been for about 6 years).  Stumbled onto it by
  182. accident and lucky for me.  Lucky for you--if you call:  80
  183. message areas, 28 file areas (including files for many
  184. communications programs), and three (3) high speed nodes. The
  185. numbers: (214) 390-7540 / 390-9273 / 390-9473.  This one is well
  186. worth the call.

  188.      Beverly Elson never let's Mark get any rest on BLUES CAFE.
  189. She keeps him busy adding, adding, and adding.  Latest additions:
  190. A fine Reading Room, USA TODAY, Online Shopping Mall, FAX door,
  191. and 900 subscription service.  I think I counted 12 CD/ROMs last
  192. time I visited, 3 nodes, and 6 nets.  It's a busy, busy system.

  195.      At the risk of sounding insensitive, let me preface the following
  196. with: THE AIDS CHATLINE is not a gay oriented BBS!  John Pfeifer sysops
  197. this system which has carved a comfortable little niche for itself in
  198. the DFW online community.  The primary information focus is geared to
  199. AIDS but it is a full-service, general interest system.  You'll find
  200. a variety of message conferences, on-line games, files, and perhaps
  201. the largest and finest collection of AIDS related Text Files in the
  202. Metroplex.  You might want to check this out, even if only to D/L
  203. the text files.  The number: 214-256-5586/

  209.      I have to continually remind myself of the above.  Case in
  210. point:  For several months I've received invitations to call a
  211. Dallas BBS and for several months I kept putting the number
  212. aside.  Why?  The name of the BBS just sort of turned me off.
  213. Not because I'm prudish but because I assumed any BBS with a name
  214. like KoZmiK KaTHouSe wasn't worth my time.  WRONG!  This BBS is
  215. worth the call.  Sysop Brian Erickson has as fine a board as
  216. you'll find anywhere.  There's something for everyone!  Are you a
  217. gamer?  You'll find 67 online games (many multinode games).  A
  218. message person?  You'll find VirtualNet, Fido, PGNet, DoorNET,
  219. SGANet, RPGnet, and Coming Soon: DataNet.  Brian is a little lite
  220. in the file area but you'll find "quality" instead of "quantity."
  221. Novice BBS'ers will appreciate the opening screen that allows you
  222. a choice of 9 system menus: Select the one you're most familiar
  223. with(i.e. Wildcat, VBBS, Random Access, etc.)
  224.      Check this one out.  Just overlook the name <grin>:
  225. The KoZmiK KaTHouSe - 2 nodes (14.4 supported) - 394-8021 / 394-
  226. 4837.

  228.      Chuck Murphy, the 32-line TEXAS TALK has expanded tremendously
  229. over the past few months.  Chuck advises he has added 6 CD/ROMs,
  230. OnLine Fax capability for users, The Guttenberg Project, and the
  231. increasingly popular Corbin 900 subscription service.  System is
  232. now powered by a 486DX 50mhz unite LAN(ed) to a 386DX 33mhz.

  235.      Al Beck's BLUES BROTHER'S BBS (214-487-3400) reminds
  236. everyone that access is still FREE to his BBS, which offers more
  237. than 6,000 files--including a 65 file area CD/Rom--online games,
  238. and a Reading Room.  System accepts calls up to 14.4.

  240.      I don't think we ever got around to publicly reviwing THE
  241. HOGARD SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS BBS in Grand Prairie, and I apologize.
  242. Chuck Hogard runs a fine system and well worth a call.  By the
  243. time you read this, Chuck's BBS should be flying the ASP APPROVED
  244. Banner, which ensures--of course--quality, functional files.

  250.      FAUNUS BBS is now TOWN CRYER BBS.  Dan Borotkanics sysops
  251. this board which boasts a modest message and file area (with good
  252. text files).  CBV allows instant access.  The number: (214)288-

  255.      We're losing a fine BBS.  Hughes Glantzberg is leaving the
  256. area and moving to Austin.  Going with him is HUGHES' PowerBBS.
  257. Hughes went online back in the latter part of '92 and quickly
  258. established a loyal and fairly large userbase.  Those of you
  259. accustomed to calling his system might want to drop by and wish
  260. him well.  He will still be accessing BBS America, so you can
  261. leave private E-Mail for him there.

  314.                 The Best Kept Secret in Texas:
  315.                      . . .and Other Stuff!

  318.      It's the best kept secret in Texas.  Austin has discovered
  319. the modem.  Someone down in Capitol Town woke up one morning and
  320. said, "Hey, we could put up a BBS and people all over the state
  321. could call and obtain information with their computer and
  322. modem."  So, they put up a BBS.  Then another.  And still
  323. another.  But, they forgot to tell us about it.
  324.  
  325.      Whoever first had the idea of establishing a state operated
  326. BBS should be enshrined in the Texas BBS Hall of Fame.  It's an
  327. idea we've all dreamed about and now it's an idea that is a
  328. reality.  Texas is online and online Big Time with world class
  329. operations.
  330.  
  331.      WINDOW ON STATE GOVERNMENT BBS, is operated by the Texas
  332. Comptroller of Public Accounts.  The Major BBS, running on
  333. Galacticom software, is free and operates on twelve (12) lines
  334. with four 14.4 and eight 9600 modems--all lines accessible by a
  335. 1-800 number.  Full access is granted on the first call and the
  336. system is extremely User-Friendly.

  338.      Drew Scherz, Sysop, says the system provides "A wide
  339. variety of economic and tax information, state spending by
  340. category and year, state revenue by source and year, news
  341. releases, and Comptroller job postings (when the statewide job
  342. freeze is lifted).
  343.  
  344.      The system also maintains an up-to-date file on winning
  345. lottery numbers.  Not only will you find the latest winning
  346. numbers online, you'll find the winning numbers from all
  347. previous lotteries and an analysis of the numbers(i.e how many
  348. times a number has been drawn, etc.).
  349.  
  350.      Gabriel Zavala, Co-Sysop, says the system "averages in the
  351. neighborhood of 200 calls per day."  He adds, "Since the first
  352. of the year, the lottery file has been the most popular
  353. download. It has been downloaded 8,000 times."
  354.  
  355.      However, despite the popularity of the Lottery file, the
  356. most important resources available on the WINDOW ON STATE
  357. GOVERNMENT BBS are the tax related files and information.
  358. Everything you might possibly want to know about Texas taxes and
  359. revenues is available for online viewing and download.  A
  360. complete index to Tax Forms can be downloaded, along with rules,
  361. publications, policy newsletters, Information Hotline numbers,
  362. and the Rules for Texas Taxes.
  363.  
  364.      The BBS provides a wealth of economic data.  With the touch
  365. of a key, users can access Total sales by city, county, and
  366. state.  Revenue and expenditure tables are available, along with
  367. state employment data.
  368.  
  369.      But the BBS gets even better. One of the menu features
  370. offers "Dial-Out to Other Government BBS'es.  Yep!  While you're
  371. online with WINDOW ON STATE GOVERNMENT BBS, select the "Dial-
  372. Out" feature and connect with three other Austin based Texas
  373. bulletin board systems:  PARKS AND WILDLIFE BBS, TEXAS
  374. MARKETPLACE BBS, and the TEXAS CANCER DATA CENTER BBS.
  375.  
  376.      The PARKS AND WILDLIFE BBS is an outdoorsman's dream (or is
  377. that outdoorsperson's dream--I get confused).  Sysop Paul Hope
  378. advises that the system is dedicated to providing Texans with
  379. "Hunting and fishing information and general outdoor recreation.
  380.  
  381.      The Major BBS, running on Galacticom software, operates on
  382. four lines--three 9600 modems and one 2400--and may be accessed
  383. from WINDOW ON STATE GOVERNMENT BBS free (via the 1-800 number)
  384. or through (512)389-4430, (512)389-4431, (512)389-4308, and
  385. (512)389-4307.  On your first call, use the 389-4430 line to set
  386. up your account.  Full access is granted on first call.
  387.  
  388.      At the moment, file selection is somewhat limited but it is
  389. obvious the system managers are working to increase the number
  390. of files.  However, the files that are listed are excellent and
  391. available for online browsing or download.  More than 173 text
  392. files are available on birds, game and fish cookery, freshwater
  393. fish, Texas mammals, endangered Texas species, and a complete
  394. listing (with description) of all Texas State parks.
  395.  
  396.      THE TEXAS MARKETPLACE BBS, operated by the Texas Department
  397. of Commerce, provides international, national, and state
  398. business opportunity leads, a Texas Company Directory, Minority
  399. Business Directory, Women-Owned Business Directory, procurement
  400. leads, business news briefs, and complete information on Texas
  401. Grants and Aid.  The system maintains a database of 35,000 Texas
  402. manufacturers and business service providers and users may
  403. conduct an online "keyword" search for information.
  404.  
  405.      The system simply bulges with business information.  There
  406. are ten (10) distinct forums or departments available and each
  407. is loaded with data for the small and large business.  One
  408. particular area caught my eye, "The Legislative Alert."  In this
  409. area you'll find information relating to Texas House and Senate
  410. Bills pertaining to Small Business.
  411.  
  412.      You'll also find information concerning the state's Waste
  413. Exchange System, state licensing and permits, and a "variety of
  414. business news, calendar items, and economic data."  There is a
  415. Rural Resource Guide, Information on "How To Sell to the State
  416. of Texas," Tourism and Travel data, and International Trade
  417. leads, Missions, and Trade Shows.
  418.  
  419.      The system requires a $10.00 registration fee and there is
  420. a possibility additional line charges will be added in
  421. September.  However, at the moment, you can browse the system
  422. free.  To log on, set your communications software to VT100
  423. emulation, dial 1-800-446-8676, type "Texis" at the select
  424. prompt, use "Guest" as your login and "guest" as your password.
  425.  
  426.      Guest access entitles you to basic browsing only and you
  427. are limited to what you can see or download.  However, if you
  428. like what you see and want to become a registered user, you need
  429. to establish a system account via the department's voice line:
  430. 1-800-888-0511.  Once registered, you'll receive a documentation
  431. manual and communications software.
  432.  
  433.      Tom Lineham is the Director of the TEXAS MARKETPLACE
  434. program (read that as Sysop) and according to Tom, "We have
  435. approximately 1100 registered users and we average about 40
  436. calls per day."
  437.  
  438.      Not too impressive, considering the amount and quality of
  439. information available on TEXAS MARKETPLACE, and the fact they've
  440. been online since April, 1992.  Obviously, a more aggressive
  441. marketing plan is needed.  And, if they don't mind a little
  442. constructive criticism, a more user-friendly environment would
  443. encourage more call backs and registrations.
  444.  
  445.      I'll warn you in advance that the BBS is a UNIX based
  446. system and, therefore, is not overly user-friendly but you'll
  447. get the hang of it. (Just keep your eye on the menu bar at the
  448. top of your screen.)
  449.  
  450.      THE TEXAS MARKETPLACE BBS is truly a valuable business
  451. resource and the Texas Department of Commerce is to be commended
  452. for going online with the system.
  453.  
  454.      THE TEXAS CANCER DATA CENTER BBS is operated by the Texas
